• The only people who pronounce the T in "often" are hillbillies and lower class New Yorkers who think they are being more formal by pronouncing it. No matter how many people say 2+2=5 it doesn't make it right.
1. Ещё один критерий, разделяющий всех англоговорящих на две категории – произношение «OFTEN». Либо /ɒf.ən/ (офн), либо /ɒf.Tən/ (офтн).
Иными словами, кто-то всё же считает нужным произносить эту T.
И это уже давно не является однозначным маркером просторечия или необразованности.
• …I used to pronounce often "ofen" until I discovered that the secondary (and original) pronunciation was "often". I understand that the common usage is to have a silent “t”, but due to the fact that it was originally pronounced with a t, is spelled with a t, and was eroded by common usage, I'm happy to re-engage it. And so is my husband!
(Bill, 35)
• Be careful when taking photos in the Red Light District. Oftentimes female entertainers verbally abuse tourists if they spot a camera, or even throw their cameras in the canal.
• Back in 90s whiskey used to be costly, so we would oftentimes prefer antifreeze.
3. И уж если речь зашла о SOMETIMES и OFTENTIMES, вот ещё несколько слов из той же категории (с суффиксом -TIME). Половина из них устаревшие (а ещё треть известна только древним бабкам из Бундокса-на-Эйвоне, которые застали ещё королеву Викторию), и всё же:
• aforetime(s)
• a-nightertime
• a-night-times
• beforetime
• beforetimes
• betime
• betimes
• between-times
• daytimes
• heretoforetime
• night-times
• oftentime
• oftentimes
• oft-time
• oft-times
• one-time
• othertime
• other-times
• quarter time
• seldom-time
• seldom-times
• seld-time
• sometimes
• toforetime
