Есть в английском занятная штука по имени эргатив. Это такая патология у многих (но не у всех) переходных глаголов, что-то среднее между действительным и страдательным залогом. Формально - active. По смыслу - passive. Смотрите сами. - The new model didn't sell all that well so they decided to phase it out. Вроде бы модель «продают», в то же время она и сама «продается». Вернее, не продается. Другие примеры: - I spilt my drink all over the table. / My drink spilt all over the table. - Do up your blouse, you shameless hooker. / This blouse does up at the back. - I broke the chair. / He sat down heavily, and the chair broke. 1. Чуть менее очевидные примеры употребления. Когда «сушить-сохнуть» или там «вешать-висеть» - это один и тот же глагол, без дополнительных надстроек: - Devin dried his eyes with a handkerchief. / The clothes dried on the line. - The referee blew his whistle and started the match. / When the whistle blows, the match starts. - The wind shook the trees. / The trees shook in the wind. - I dropped my cup on the floor. / My cup dropped on the floor and shattered. - The savages cooked Captain Cook with passion / Captain Cook was gently cooking over the little fire with savages sitting around, dribbling. 2. Бывает и хуже: непереходный (казалось бы) глагол «летать» является также и переходным «управлять/поднимать в воздух»: - The plane was flying at twice the speed of sound / I’m learning to fly a plane. Или еще: She normally walks to work. / She normally walks her racoons before work. 3. И из самого «нерусского»: - He reads a novel a month. - Her new novel reads particularly well. - The plaque read, "This statue of someone was put here for no apparent reason".
